Course Policies
Homework policy:
Each homework assignment contains a numbered list of the items to be completed. These are the items I will be grading.
To recieve a passing grade, your assignments must be:
- Complete
I cannot give a meaningful grade to assignments that are not substantially complete, or do not meet the minimum assignment requirements.
- On time
Assignments are marked down 25% for each week they are late.
I do not accept assignments more than two weeks late.
- Your own original work
No code copied from templates, pre-packaged layouts, in-class examples, etc.
Assignment structure:
There are 5 assignments. Assignments increase in complexity and point value as the quarter progresses.
- A1 is worth 100 points.
- A2 and A3 are worth 200 points each.
- A4 and A5 are worth 300 points each.
- Refer to the homework page each week for assignment details.
How to submit your homework:
- Finish and validate your assignment.
- Upload your work to a server.
- Update your portal page to link to the assignment. Test the link.
- Be sure your profile's homework URL on the testing/grading web site points to your portal page. Test the link.
- Don’t make changes to an assignment after the deadline and before I post the grades. If your page changes during my grading process, it will be graded as a late assignment.
Your homework must be accessible through your profile's homework URL by 2:00 PM on the due date. Do not submit assignments by email.
Assignment requirements:
- All class work must be completed using Dreamweaver CS5's editing and FTP tools.
- All assignments must be written using valid XHMTL and CSS. Use the W3C validator, place the validation badges on your page, and test the buttons before submitting your assignment.
- Late assignments will be marked down 25% per week, and are not accepted more than two weeks late. An assignment is late if I can't find it to grade by 2:00 PM on the due date (if your profile doesn't reflect your current portal page URL, or if the assignment isn't linked to your portal page).
- Don’t skip class to finish an assignment. It will be considered late anyway, and missing class will only get you further behind.
Test structure:
- There are five online review tests, worth 100 points each. Test dates are listed on the course schedule.
- Test questions are typically a review of our textbook reading assignments. However, I may throw in a lecture question here and there, on occasion.
- Tests will be turned on at the end of class on Wednesdays, and will be turned off at 9:00 PM the following Sunday.
- Once turned off, tests will not be turned on again, ever. Please don't ask.
- Tests are found on our password protected testing
site: http://www.billnsara.com/raven/dw/default.asp
Grading
To earn a grade of 4.0, you must:
- Attend all classes
- Check the class website regularly for updates
- Complete all reading assignments during the week they are assigned
- Take all tests on time, scoring a cumulative of 98% or above
- Complete all assignments on time and post them to your portal page, scoring a cumulative of 98% or above
- Our last class will be held on Wednesday, December 14th.
- The final assignment (Assignment 5) is worth 300 points, and must be linked to your portal page no later than 9:00 AM on Thursday, December 15th.
- NO LATE final assignments will be accepted.
Instructor Responsibilities:
- I will make every effort to issue grades for your assignments and tests within a reasonable timeline (usually within one week after the due date).
- I will attempt to answer questions about any project, test, or assignment up until the afternoon before it is due. I may not be available on short notice.
- I can help you best if you start your work when it is assigned so that you may ask your questions early. (I usually post assignments to the class website 7 days before the due date.)
- To get help with your code, validate first, then post your work to your server space and send me the URL in an email.
- I do not give one on one lectures for class time missed.
Student Responsibilities:
- The syllabus is a plan for the quarter and is subject to change at any time. It is your responsibility to be aware of any changes by attending class and viewing the class website.
- I often make announcements about tests and assignments at the beginning of class: I strongly recommend that you arrive on time.
- You are responsible for obtaining any assignments or material you missed if you were not in class.
- It is extremely important that you attend each class and keep up with the reading assignments. You are responsible for completing assigned reading and homework prior to class.
- You are expected to complete work outside of class, which will involve a computer, textbook, Internet and class website access, email and Dreamweaver CS5 software.
- This class requires at least 4 - 6 hours per week of homework time outside of class. You may use open labs on campus or other resources in order to complete your homework.
- Start your assignments early: these assignments take time. If you have questions about the assignment, it's best to ask sooner rather than later.
- I encourage you to work and problem-solve with other students, but you MUST turn in your own work. Your assignments must be web pages you built yourself, using code you wrote from scratch. Code copied from other students, the internet, Dreamweaver's pre-packaged templates, or in-class examples is not acceptable, and will earn your assignment a zero.
- Students found plagiarizing or cheating will receive no credit, and will also be subject to college disciplinary action. For more information, refer to your Academic Dishonesty policy in the college catalog or student handbook.
- There are no make-up tests under any circumstances, but with good cause and adequate notice, you may arrange to take a test early. Only official excuses with prior notice and instructor's approval will be accepted. A minimum time required for notification is 12 hours BEFORE the beginning of a test. Any missed test without prior approval will result in a score of "0" for that missed test.
Your final grade will be based upon a standard point evaluation chart. Your password protected test and grading site will provide you with ongoing test and assignment grades with your cummulative percentage points.
Raven's Wickedly High But Totally Reasonable Class Expectations:
- Attend Class Regularly
Much of the material you'll need to successfully complete your assignments is covered in lecture, and is not available in any other format.
- Arrive on Time
Class begins at 6:00 PM. Please be logged in to your computer, have Dreamweaver and Firefox open, and your Dreamweaver site settings loaded.
- Don't Multi-task During Lectures
Please give me the courtesy of your undivided attention during lectures. If you have urgent business that cannot wait until the end of class, the computer lab is down the hall.
- Do the Reading in the Week It's Assigned
Don't wait until the test to do the reading. Reading each chapter when its assigned will greatly help you to understand the lectures and successfully complete the homework.
- If You Want Help With Code, Send Me the URL
I'm happy to help you with your assignments, but I can't read your mind. Send me the URL so I can see your actual code. It also really helps if you give me a clear description of what you're trying to do.
ADA Accomodations:
If you need course adaptations or accommodation because of a disability, if you have emergency medical information
to share with me, or if you need special arrangements in case the building must be evacuated, please make an appointment
with me as soon as possible.
